Laboratory examination of urine. Urinalysis, that is, analysis of the urine, involves chemical, physical, and microscopic tests. Urine is a filtrate of the blood and is produced in the kidneys. It is a reflection of the metabolic activity of the body, and conditions that affect the normal homeostatic mechanisms of the body are often revealed by a careful analysis of the composition of the urine. In general, abnormal urinalysis results indicate a pathological illness or disease. Modern routine urinalysis is typically divided into two basic procedures: macroscopic and chemical examination (Fig. 1), and microscopic analysis.
