Predators actively hunt, kill, and consume their prey for the sake of nutrition. Although the stakes are high for both parties involved, they are more important for the prey item. If the prey loses in the interaction, it loses its life, whereas the predator merely loses a meal. Therefore, it is reasoned that predation has played an important role in structuring modern and ancient biological communities and influencing animal evolution through geological time.
