When certain optically anisotropic transparent crystals are subjected to white light, a cube of the material is found to transmit a different color through each of the three pairs of parallel faces. Such crystals are sometimes termed trichroic, and the phenomenon is called trichroism. This expression is used only rarely today since the colors in a particular crystal can appear quite different if the cube is cut with a different orientation with respect to the crystal axes. Accordingly, the term is frequently replaced by the more general term pleochroism. Even this term is being replaced by the phrase linear dichroism or circular dichroism to correspond with linear birefringence or circular birefringence.
