The product of a force and its perpendicular distance to a point of turning; also called the moment of the force. In physics and classical mechanics, torque arises from a force or forces acting tangentially to a cylinder or from any force or force system acting about a point. In this way, torque is the rotational equivalent of linear force. Everyday examples of torque include opening or closing a bottle by twisting a cap, as well as the opening and closing of a door that swings on hinges (see illustration).
