A branch of civil engineering that deals with the analysis, design, and construction of structures composed of one or more solid members so arranged that each structure can carry the loads expected during its service life without appreciable change in geometry. A structural engineer analyzes the forces, such as wind, earthquakes, and the weight of the structure, that a structure may encounter and designs the structure to resist them. Typical structures that are considered as objects of structural engineering include bridges, buildings, dams, towers, gymnasiums, chimneys, off-shore oil platforms, and the like (Fig. 1).
