Glycine max, an erect annual legume native to China that is widely cultivated for forage and for its seed, which is a major source of vegetable protein and oil for human and animal consumption and for industrial usage. Introduced from China into North America in 1765, soybean plants (Fig. 1) were first grown as a curiosity and then as a forage and soil-building crop.
