Concrete that is able to repair itself autonomously in response to damage, such as cracks, through the incorporation of a healing agent. Depending on the healing agent, cracks will close within a few hours or a few weeks, and the concrete cover on top of the steel reinforcement (rebar) will again fulfill its function to protect the steel from intruding corrosive substances (see illustration).
