Communication over the Internet is inherently insecure unless various schemes of authentication, integrity checking, and confidentiality protection are combined to achieve the desired level of security. Secure internet communication is the set of protocols that provides a certain level of security to any parties who use the inherently insecure Internet to exchange data and information. Because of its ubiquity, the Internet has become the most frequently used medium for exchanging information and data across the globe. Its application spans fields as diverse as e-commerce, education, and the financial sector. However, the Internet was not designed with security in mind. It was not until recently that new protocols and add-on services were introduced to establish and strengthen security on the Internet.
