A salt or an ester of salicylic acid. Salicylates (2-hydroxybenzenecarboxylate or 2-hydroxybenzoate) are naturally produced at high levels in some plants, such as in the white willow tree (Salix alba) in its bark and in the wintergreen shrub in its leaves (see illustration). In plant cells, salicylates are synthesized from the amino acid phenylalanine.
