Methods for reducing solid waste by reusing discarded materials. Recycling technologies use waste materials to make new products. They involve collecting recyclable materials, manufacturing or reprocessing them into new products, and purchasing products made from recycled materials (Fig. 1). Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, conserves natural resources, and saves energy, thereby reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Various techniques have been developed to recycle plastics, glass, metals, paper, wood, and electronic waste.
