The plant Boehmeria nivea, a stingless member of the nettle family (Urticaceae), which is cultivated as a source of a tough, strong, durable, lustrous natural woody fiber. Ramie (see illustration), which is also known as China grass, is the only member of the nettle family that is used commercially for fiber. This herbaceous perennial is erect, usually nonbranching, and 1–2 m (3.3–6.6 ft) in height at maturity. The fiber, which comes from the phloem (inner bark), is exceptionally strong, and it has uses similar to those for fiber flax. See also: Fiber crops; Flax; Natural fiber; Phloem; Rosales; Textile
