Quantum communications exploits the quantum mechanical properties of elementary particles such as photons to encode and decode information in order to transmit it between distant locations more securely and efficiently than classical communication systems can. This article will review these phenomena and techniques, and the enabling ideas that underlie them. In addition to the currently available solutions, the challenges involved will also be surveyed.
