Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) constitute a class of small flying systems intended to perform nontraditional tasks, such as indoor and/or urban surveillance and reconnaissance. A sense of vehicle size is given by the DARPA definition, which classifies MAVs to have a maximum span of about 15 cm (5 in.) and a gross take-off weight of less than 200 g (7 oz). At such small scales, new flight principles emerge, which are only now being explored from a vehicle standpoint. Consequently, the MAV arena is evolving rapidly as new technologies are conceived and investigated. The recent design and development of the Nano Hummingbird by AeroVironment challenges MAV researchers to understand the fundamental principles that govern MAV flight and to transition this understanding to new approaches for MAV design. This step is necessary to achieve levels of MAV performance on par with birds and insects.
