An electrochemical technique used in analytical chemistry, polarography is electrolysis using a dropping mercury electrode. The technique enables the obtaining of current-voltage curves from which the concentration of many species can be determined with high reproducibility at very low concentrations. Hydrogen overvoltage is high at the dropping mercury electrode, which enables reaching negative potentials. This is useful for reduction of species less easily reduced (at potentials more negative than about −1.5 V). When other electrodes, including solid or other forms of mercury electrodes, are used for recording current-voltage curves, the technique is called voltammetry. See also: Electrolysis
