It is a commonplace observation that several body organs have strong regenerative abilities. For example, a cut in the skin is repaired within a few days, and a broken bone heals in a few weeks. This is in stark contrast to the observation that damage to the nervous system results in functional deficits that are only partially reversible. To overcome the limited ability for recovery of neuronal function, two main strategies—neuronal transplantation and enhancement of adult neurogenesis (neuron formation)—have been pursued, aiming to replace neurons lost to disease or injury.
