A ship that is capable of engaging in warfare or of providing support for military operations. Surface warships range in size from 100,000-ton aircraft carriers down to patrol craft that cannot easily leave harbor, just as navies range from global organizations like the U.S. Navy down to those limited to defending small local areas or even to trying to control merchant shipping near their ports.
