A new family of two-dimensional (2D) materials synthesized by selectively etching the A layers from the parent layered MAX phases. MAX phases have a general formula Mn + 1AXn, where M is a transition metal, A is mostly a Group 13 or 14 element, X is carbon and/or nitrogen, and n = 1, 2, or 3 (Fig. 1).
