To better understand volcanic phenomena, researchers are interested in how magma evolves while stored in the Earth's crust and how it subsequently ascends and erupts at the surface. The textures and compositional variations that minerals develop in response to magmatic changes can be used to interpret the rates and mechanics of how these processes operate. Textural analysis of lava flows and lava domes, along with compositional analysis of minerals and surrounding melt (glass), can be particularly effective in studying these processes and ultimately aid in volcanic hazards assessment.
