The discovery of microRNAs (miRNAs) is one of the major scientific breakthroughs in recent years, revolutionizing our understanding about gene regulation. In general, miRNAs are short, single-stranded RNAs [approximately 22 nucleotides (nt) in length], and they are expressed by all multicellular eukaryotes. Although miRNAs do not encode any proteins directly, they can regulate the expression of about 60% of all protein-coding genes in humans. The high sequence conservation of many miRNAs among distantly related organisms suggests strong evolutionary pressures and participation in essential processes. In fact, miRNAs have been shown to participate in the regulation of almost every cellular process investigated to date.
