A contiguous metallic matrix containing a significant volume fraction of another phase (the reinforcement), which is commonly a ceramic. The reinforcement may be in the form of particles, platelets, or fibers (short or continuous), and their scale may range from submicrometer to millimeter. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are not alloys, and so can be distinguished from multiphase metallic alloys. The concept of an MMC introduces additional degrees of freedom into designing the microstructure, compared to conventional metallic alloys. By tailoring the reinforcement type, content, size, shape, distribution, and orientation, materials with desirable combinations of properties that are not obtainable by conventional alloying and heat treatment can be created.
