A natural fiber obtained from two Asiatic species, Corchorus capsularis and C. olitorius (which are also termed jute), of the plant family Malvaceae (alternatively Tiliaceae). Jute plants (see illustration) are tall, slender, half-shrubby annuals that reach 2.4–3.6 m (8–12 ft) in height. The leaves of jute plants are also eaten as a vegetable (called jute mallow), particularly in Southeast Asia, northern Africa, and the Middle East. See also: Malvales
