The uses of the radiation emitted by radioactive isotopes (radioisotopes), principally in industry and medicine. Although this article deals primarily with gamma irradiation, many other forms of radiation from many different sources are often used for irradiation purposes. The use of radioactive isotopes to irradiate various materials can be divided into a number of major areas, including industrial, medical, and research (Table 1). For most applications the radioactive isotope is placed inside a capsule, but for some medical applications it is dispersed in the material to be irradiated. See also: Radioisotope
