In the simplest sense, the liquid phase that forms on the melting of an ionic compound (that is, a salt) and consists entirely of discrete ions (Fig. 1). More specifically, ionic liquids are the liquid phase of organic salts (organic, complex cations) which melt at, or near, ambient temperature (below 100–150°C; 212–302°F).
