An astrophysical observatory built into the ice at the South Pole that is designed to detect nearly massless subatomic particles known as neutrinos. IceCube is the world’s largest neutrino detector, utilizing a detection medium that consists of a gigaton of pristine Antarctica ice with a volume of approximately a cubic kilometer (hence the name, “IceCube”) (Fig. 1). The facility, which began taking data in 2005 and had its main array completed in 2010, serves as both a particle physics experiment and an astronomical observatory.
