One of the most important areas of research in the study of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the determination of the molecular mechanisms in the binding of the virus to cells. If investigators can identify the exact mechanisms, then it is hoped that antiretroviral therapies can be designed to inhibit binding of the virus to target cells, thereby preventing HIV infection and development of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is the final stage of the HIV infection.
