Heat, a form of kinetic energy, is transferred in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. Heat can be transferred between states of matter only if a temperature difference exists and then only in the direction of decreasing temperature. Beyond this, the mechanisms and laws governing the three kinds of heat transfer are quite different, although they often co-occur in commonplace processes (Fig. 1).
