HD RadioTM technology allows broadcasters to upgrade AM and FM radio from analog to digital. The HD Radio digital carriers are broadcast in the current AM and FM bands alongside the existing analog signal, and are therefore termed in-band. Because the digital signal is within the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) spectral emissions mask established for each AM and FM station, it is also termed on-channel. This design gives HD Radio technology its generic technical name: in-band, on-channel digital broadcasting, or IBOC.
