An order of sponges of the class Demospongiae, including species with a skeleton made up of a single category of siliceous megascleres embedded in spongin fibers or joined together in a network by a spongin cement. The megascleres are usually diactinal, sometimes monactinal. Microscleres (never asters) are present or absent. A modified dermal skeleton is absent. Several genera lack spicules and have a skeleton of spongin fibers only. Species of this order are encrusting, massive, or lobate, and many species form large upright branching colonies (Fig. 1), the branches often being hollow.
