Wood is a useful and renewable material. However, it is susceptible to biodegradation (fungal decay and insect and marine borer attack), particularly where the wood is wet. Furfurylated wood is lumber and other wood products modified with a polymer made from furfuryl alcohol (C5H6O2). Furfuryl alcohol is a liquid made from plant waste. Furfurylation is accomplished by impregnating wood with a mixture of furfuryl alcohol and catalyst and then heating to cause polymerization. The purpose of furfurylation is to improve physical and biological properties such as resistance to moisture and decay. In addition, furfurylated wood is nontoxic.
