The application of engineering principles and practices to facilitate the sustainable management of forests. Forest engineering commonly includes responsibility for securing forest raw materials for processing into products or services at an economically feasible cost while protecting environmental and social values. It is a hybrid discipline: part forestry, part engineering. It arises from the need for engineering expertise in the special context of forestry, where an in-depth understanding of forest management and natural-resource environmental issues is critically important.
