E-taxonomy (also termed electronic taxonomy and Web taxonomy) is an emerging area within the field of biodiversity informatics relating to the transformation of taxonomy into an Internet-based science (e-science). Taxonomy, here defined as the science and practice of the classification of biological organisms, is well suited to the technological opportunities offered by the Internet and stands to benefit through the resolution of challenges facing both practitioners and users of taxonomy. The term cybertaxonomy is another synonym for e-taxonomy, although it is regarded by some as a broader term incorporating the general use of information technology (IT) in taxonomic research.
