An order of flowering plants, division Magnoliophyta (Angiospermae), class Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons), subclass Dilleniidae. The order Dilleniales consists of one family: the Dilleniaceae, which comprises about 350 species. (The family Paeoniaceae was formerly included in the Dilleniales, but has now been moved to the order Saxifragales.) Members of the Dilleniales are marked by separate carpels; numerous stamens; ovules that are bitegmic (having two integuments) and crassinucellate (having a nucellus that is more than one cell thick); and seeds that have a well-developed endosperm and are provided with an aril (a partial or complete covering or appendage, usually derived from the funiculus of the ovule). The Australian ornamental plant Hibbertia dentata (see illustration), commonly known as the trailing guinea flower, belongs to the order.
