A mosquito-borne viral infection throughout the world's tropical and subtropical zones. Dengue fever (also known as breakbone fever and dandy fever) is an acute viral disease of humans characterized by fever, rash, prostration, and lymphadenopathy. The dengue virus exists in four antigenically distinct serotypes or subtypes. The main natural reservoir of the dengue virus is humans, and the virus is normally transmitted through the bite of infected female Aedes mosquitoes, principally A. aegypti (see illustration).
