Electrolysis cell in which a product is obtained with 100% efficiency as a result of an electrochemical reaction. The quantity of electricity, that is, the number of coulombs of electricity (Q), can be determined very accurately by weighing the product that is deposited on an electrode in the course of the electrochemical reaction. The relationship between the weight of the product formed in the coulometer and the quantity of electricity used is given by Faraday's laws of electrolysis. When a constant current of i amperes flows through the electrolyte in the coulometer for t seconds, the number of coulombs passed is given by Eq. (1).
