A composite material that consists essentially of a binding medium, such as a mixture of portland cement and water, within which are embedded particles or fragments of aggregate, usually a combination of fine and coarse aggregate. Other important concrete terminology can be defined. A mixture of cement and water is called cement paste. Cement paste plus fine aggregate is called mortar or concrete matrix. Mortar plus coarse aggregate constitutes concrete. See also: Mortar
