The biological basis of natural resistance to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an important area of research. By identifying the mechanisms involved in this natural resistance, it is hoped that therapeutic interventions will be developed to combat HIV infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), which is the final stage of the HIV infection.
