A group of diseases affecting joints or their component tissues. Arthritis is the collective term used to describe any joint disorder or process; it also typically involves inflammation. In common usage, arthritis often refers to any joint pain. Several types of arthritis are recognized (Fig. 1), and these can be divided into categories by their clinical course and pathologic appearance. There are four basic types of arthritis: inflammatory arthritis, degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis), nonarticular rheumatism, and miscellaneous arthritis.
