One of the cellular aggregations traditionally known as chemoreceptors which are generally found adjacent to the aortic arch and pulmonary artery and which often are adjacent to the origin of the subclavian arteries (see illustration). The term is best restricted to those groups of cells that have topographic, morphological, and functional similarities. However, many aggregations of epitheloid cells have been described which lie adjacent to the aorta in the thorax, in the root of the neck, and in the abdomen, and any of these could be included, with some topographic descriptive justification, in the group called aortic bodies.
