One of the three living orders of the class Amphibia, encompassing the frogs and toads. Anura is the largest order of amphibians (class Amphibia), containing more than 7000 species of frogs (Fig. 1) and toads. Because members of the order Anura (anurans) lack a tail, they differ most obviously from salamanders (order Urodela; also called Caudata). Usually, frogs and toads have long hind limbs adapted for the hopping locomotion that is characteristic of individuals of the order. Anurans also differ from the limbless caecilians, which are members of Apoda, that is, the third order of amphibians. See also: Amphibia; Apoda; Urodela
