Composed of more than 500,000 acres (200,000 hectares) of wilderness and serving as a refuge for some of the richest and most diverse communities of life in the temperate world, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (located in Tennessee and North Carolina) is considered to be the most diverse national park in America. Because of its expanse of elevations and habitats, environments similar to those found in areas ranging from Arkansas to Canada can be studied without ever leaving its boundaries. As a result, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was designated an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site in 1976 and 1983, respectively.
