There are approximately 8 million bone fractures a year in North America. Approximately 90% of these are simple fractures that are treated with a cast or brace. The remaining 10% are more severe and require some kind of intervention to facilitate healing. Today, surgeons have a wide range of implant options, including metal plates, screws, nails, and external fixation frames. These innovations have greatly improved the clinical outcome and lives of countless patients. In the ideal case, an implant would be removed upon successful fracture healing. In reality, this is rarely done because it subjects the patient to an additional operation and associated risks.
