The ozone (O3) layer located above the troposphere, containing about 90 percent of the atmosphere's ozone and acting as an ultraviolet-radiation screen. While ozone is found in trace quantities throughout the atmosphere, the largest concentrations are located in the lower stratosphere in a layer between 15 and 30 km (9 and 18 mi). Since International Geophysical Year 1957–1958, ozone has been continuously monitored from a network of ground stations providing observations of the total ozone column abundance and, in certain cases, of the vertical distribution of O3 between the surface and approximately 18 mi (30 km) altitude (Fig. 1).
