Plants that grow well in soils having a high salt content, referred to as halophytic plants. Plants of saline environments (halophytes) constitute approximately 1% of the world's flora and have evolved to flourish in locations where the soil salt concentration [notably, sodium chloride (NaCl)] is 200 mol m−3 or greater (Fig. 1).
