An analytical technique for separating volatile components based on their boiling points and the rate at which they travel through a column containing an adsorbent phase. Most compounds with boiling points below about 250°C can be readily analyzed by this technique. A complex mixture is separated into its components by eluting the components from a heated column packed with sorbent by means of a moving gas phase. A diagram for a typical apparatus and chromatogram is shown in the illustration. A chromatogram is a two-dimensional plot displaying peaks representing the separated components.
