Figure 2.Schematic diagram of the capsid of a foot-and- mouth disease virion. The four structural proteins, VP1–4 (also called 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D), make up a protein subunit or protomer. Five protomers join to form a pentamer, and a capsid is an assembly of 12 protomers. VP4 (1A) is located internally beneath the other three proteins.
