Fluorescent signals in Lysiosquilla glabriuscula. (a) A male L. glabriuscula in its burrow entrance illuminated by blue light, similar to the illumination occurring at depths occupied by some individuals. Note the very low contrast appearance of the animal. (b) The same animal, also illuminated with blue light but seen through a filter that transmits only yellow light (simulating how another mantis shrimp would perceive this image). The bright fluorescent patches on the antennal scales stand out clearly as visual signals. (Photographs courtesy of Roy L. Caldwell)
