The technique of RES, with a U.S. Navy C130 Hercules aircraft as used in the 1970s to obtain approximately 400,000 km (250,000 mi) worth of flight track in both east and west Antarctica. The example shows how subglacial lakes may be distinguished from other ice-bed reflections. The data also illustrate the nature of internal ice sheet layering measured by RES.
