Figure 1.Mechanism for growth cone guidance. With operative alignment, the axon must be physically aligned with the target. For neurotropism, the growth cone follows a chemotactic gradient of neurotransmitters secreted by the target tissue. With contact guidance, the axons follow physical guideposts to reach their target. In neurotrophism, growth cones will reach a target and receive chemical support if it is the correct one.
