Direct audio broadcasting from satellites to mobile and stationary user receivers. This concept originated in the late 1980s as an outgrowth of direct television broadcasting from satellites to home receivers. There are currently two satellite radio systems (also known as satellite digital audio radio service, abbreviated SDARS) operating in the continental United States, a third providing service to users in Korea, and another in advanced planning to serve Europe.
