The rapid development of computer power and information technology has greatly affected the way that business is conducted, and has opened up a new means, electronic commerce (e-commerce or EC). In particular, the commercialization and privatization of the Internet and its swift rise in popularity are fueling the growth of electronic commerce. Electronic commerce requires methodologies and systems that support the creation of information sources; effective and efficient interactions among sellers, consumers, intermediaries, and producers; and the movement of information across global networks (see illus.).
